I've read a book by Sue Townsend wich is entitled "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4".
Sue Townsend is an English novelist, playwrite and screenwriter. She is best known as the author of the Adrian Mole series of books. Her writing style usually combines comedy with social commentary. Nevertheless, she has written purelly dramatic works such as "Ghost Children" as well.
"The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4" is the first book in the Adrian Mole series of comedic fiction and the author's best-seller. The plot is based upon the 2-year period of life of a teenager who considers himself to be an "intelectual". In his diary Adrian tells about his worries and beliefs, the first love and problems with his parents.
In my view, this book is an outstanding example of English sarcastic humor. While reading this novel you understand all the peculiarities of English class divided and politically divided society. I was deeply impressed by the way Sue Townsand combines splendid irony (I couldn't help myself loughing) with very interesting and imortant things like problems of a young person who tries to be intelligent and moral but faces physiological and psycological problems of youth or with historically important facts. I would advise everybody to read this true masterpiece of English comedic fiction!

Shall I be the first?

To my mind, I have chosen the best cult book, "FARENHEIT 451" by Ray Bradbury.

This masterpiece was written fifty years ago. Nevertheless, it reflects our modern world as the mirror.

This novel is about the USA in the nearest future. The main character is Guy Montag. His profession seems to be quite normal, he is a fireman. But the object of the future firemen is to burn all the books, inspite of fire extinguishing. He has an ordinary wife, Mildred, who is interested in television programms. Their life could be quite simple, but he met a girl with some oddities. Clarissa likes to feel the rain on her face, to observe people. In the end of their first meeting she asked him if he was happy. And this question overthrew his life.

In my opinion this book is brilliant. It shows us the value of books, of mind and also the importance of human relationships.

This book stumalates its readers to think and to change their spiritual values.

I have read the book "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. It is a romantic novel. It deals with the problem of love and pride. The main characters of this book are Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy.
In the beginning of the book Elizabeth meets a rich and snobby man, Mr Darcy, whom she hates almost immediately. She learns things from some other acquaintances about him which makes her dislike him even more. However, she soon learns that she may have been misled about him.

I think it is a wonderful and sweet love story. The characters are very bright. We need to be careful on judging other people.

Mrs. Dalloway
published on 14 May 1925 is a novel by Virginia Woolf. Is one of the most moving, revolutionary artworks of the twentieth century.

I think that "Mrs. Dalloway" is a great novel and a vivid portrait of a single day in a woman's life. Mrs.Clarissa Dalloway is the wife of British MP Richard Dalloway.
She is going to have a party because Clarissa is perfect society hostess. As she readies her house, she is flooded with remembrances of faraway times. And, met with the realities of the present, Clarissa analyzes the choices that brought her there, She tries to reconcile to an old age. This internal thought process is made possible by an inner monologue and stream of consciousness, of which Virginia Woolf is famous for.
The people who are in Clarissa live: her one-time suitor Peter Walsh, lately returned from India, her childhood friend Sally Seton, her daughter Elizabeth and spinster tutor Miss Kilman, and a political hostess, Lady Bruton. A complimentary character is Septimus Warren Smith, a shell-shock victim who has retreated into a private world and ends the day by committing suicide. He and Clarissa Dalloway never meet, but their lives are connected by external events.
You should read this wonderful book ,about Old age, while you are still young.

I have read the book “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury, one of the best science-fiction writers in the world, who had written more than 500 stories, novels, plays and poems. This is the ingenious book of the ingenious author. “Fahrenheit 451” is the most famous novel, written by Bradbury. It shows the nearest future of mankind – no books, no thinking – only blue blinking of TV-screens. The protagonist of the book, whose name is Guy Montag, is a fireman, but his duties are very unusual for us – he doesn’t stop fires, he starts it. Thoughts bring sufferings, so burn books – they are evil! Guy Montag is in early 30`s and he is pleased with his well-paid and prestigious job, but once he meets young 17-year old girl, who is said to be crazy, and his life turns upside down…

On my opinion this book is really striking and it is unbelievable that it was written in 1953 – 55 years ago! It is very deep psychologically and philosophically. It shows us the books are the real keepers of wisdom and we can avoid a lot of mistakes only by reading and analyzing books. I think that it is really necessary to read this novel.

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was an English humorist, one of the most beloved and most popular writers of the 20th Century. He was born in Guildford in 1881 and educated at Dulwich College in London. He eventually moved to the USA and gained American citizenship in 1955.
Over the course of Wodehouse's career, he wrote plays, lyrics, nearly a hundred novels and countless short stories and articles. He wrote several non-affiliated novels, such as Piccadilly Jim and Hot Water, and series featuring characters like Psmith and Lord Emsworth. However, the most popular and best-known of Wodehouse's books are his stories which followed the life of Bertie Wooster and his valet of superior intelligence, Jeeves.
The stories of Jeeves and Wooster are stereotyped in such a way that they typically start and end in similar situations, with relatively similar plot lines involving elements such as misunderstandings and quirky situations.
Carry On, Jeeves introduces Jeeves the gentleman’s personal gentleman of Bertram Wooster. In the first chapter of this book, we actually hear the story of how Bertie first met Jeeves.
Bertie and his friends get in one trouble after another, usually involving a woman and misplaced affection, often involving meddling aunts. When Bertie tries to use his own devices to save the situation, matters inevitably get worse. However, once Jeeves takes charge, all comes together and things end up good.
I liked this book very much and sometimes it was impossible to stay serious. I got plenty of pleasure while reading. I think I’ll read one more book about Jeeves and Wooster.

I have read Sue Townsend's book "Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, aged 13 3/4". This book was based on her children's experiences at Mary Linwood Comprehensive School in Leicester.

This book is about a boy of 13 years who treats himself an intellectual. In his diary he writes about everything: problems with parents, first love, his thoughts and impressions.

This book represents typically British people. As all we know British don’t pay much attention to their children, we can see this typically British feature here. And also it is full of English sarcastic humor.

And to sum up I want say that I really liked this book. Here you can read about all the thoughts and ideas of a teenage boy. I would recommend this book to everyone, because it’s extremely original and funny. Especially when you’re a teenager it’s a great book to read, because you might recognize all the problems Adrian has.

I have read the book "Gennie Gerhardt" by Theodore Dreiser. Dreiser humanizes literature, the characters posess complex personalities and phesical appearrances. He takes the aesthetic beauty and the honesty of harsh reality and combines these potent elements into a story of life, almost more believable than our own.

The main character is Jennie, the daughter of German immigrants. This novel shows us Jennie's life from cleaning houses with her mother, bearing a child by a US Senator and living and loving a man beyond her society class. Jennie defies social conventions when she agrees to engage in relationship with two wealthy men. She was punished for lovihg two men from the upper class of society. However she struggles to maintain her dignity through a series of cruel twists of fate.

We still live in a time of social and financial inequality. Dreiser raise us his theme of fate and how some can dictate it while others are slaves to it. This book is about a woman searching for a place in life and the story chronicles how one mistake can change your life.
I enjoyed it very much and I would recommend everybody to read this novel.

I've chosen two detective stories ("The Hound of Baskervilles" and "The valley of Fear") by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who is an english writer, and "The Mysterious Stranger" by Mark Twain, who represents american literature.
Some words about "The mysterioua Stranger". In this novel M.Twain tells about immorality, mercenariness and shows the decay of the spirits in society. He explains that it was and will be so forever. It's like a closed circle. People just can't live without envy. They try to make the life of the main character unbearable, just because he is the best in every sphere. For me, it was remakable to see the illustration of the church. M.Twain shows, that even in the 16th century the money was the solution for many problems. For example,a sinful person can pay a certain amount of money and he'll become saint. After reading, I asked myself a question "If there is a drawn parallel or something like a bridge to the modern life?"

I have read the book "An American Tragedy" by Theodore Dreiser.
This book is based on an actual criminal case. An American Tragedy was the inspiration for the film A Place in the Sun, winner of six Academy Awards, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift.
On the one level, An American Tragedy is the story of the corruption and destruction of the man, Clyde Griffiths, who forfeits his life in desperate pursuit of success. On a deeper, more profound level, the novel represents a massive portrayal of the society whose values both shape Clyde's tawdry ambitions and seal his fate: It is an unsurpassed depiction of the harsh realities of American life and of the dark side of the American Dream. Extraordinary in scope and power, vivid in its rich compassion, An American Tragedy stands as Theodore Dreiser's supreme achievement.
As for me, i don't like this author at all! his novels are always depressing and leave bad taste

I've read "The Lost World" by Conan Doyle.
Conan Doyle was born on the 22-nd of May in 1859 in Edinburgh and died on the 7-th of July in 1930. He was an author most noted for his stories about the detective Sharlock Holmes, which are generally considered a major innovation in the field of crime fiction, and also the author was well-known for the adventures of Professor Challenger. Conan Doyle was a prolific writer whose other works include science fiction stories, historical novels, plays and romances, poetry and non-fiction.
There are several of his works:
"The Great Shadow" (historical novel), "Round the Red Lamp", "Tales of Terror and Mystery" and others.
"The Lost World" is a science fiction novel, published in 1912. It is the 1-st book from cycle of works about Professor Challenger. Different dangerous and fascinating adventures of British expedition to South America are described in the novel. On the mountain plateau Challenger with his companions found the lost world. This was a district inhabited different kinds of dinosaurs, ape-men and primitive people of Stone Age.
The plot of the book is the quest of dinosaurs in distant corners of the world. The action took place in jungle. The main hero of the novel is Professor Challenger who also was a scientist-fanatic.
I liked this book very much because I like most of all interesting, gripping, involving stories with happy end. And I advice you to read it!

I have read a novel by Somerset Maugham «The Magician».There is a lot of magic and mistic in this book but at the same time the auther describes the peopel`s mode of life their clothes, affairs, restorants where they to go in detail.I didn`t quite like «The Magician» as I am not fond of unrealistic books. This novel is about love.In oder to revenge him self the magician charms the main characteur`s bride. At the end she dies.In this novel the author wanted to describe magic, alchimy, chemical experiments because at the beginning of the 20th century when the novel was written it was very popular.I wouldn`t advise to read this book.To my mind other novels such as «The Theatre» and «The Painted Veil» are worth reading. These are very true-to-live books,in which people`s problems close to real life are described.

I have read the book "The Picture Of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde, one of the most well-known English-Irish author of the Classical Literature.
My impressions about this book are quite positive. I find it to some extent didactic. The problems of the Good and the Evil are regarded there. I can also say that this book is also a bit philosophic because here we watch some problems of presence of something supernatural and its influence to the reality. So I guess that it would be quite difficult to define the genre of the book. I consider that it is a kind of synthesis of didactics, philosophy and fiction which makes a plot of the masterpiece.
The main problem of the book concerns the reciprocal influence of the virtue with self-conciousness and total freedom with full enjoying of life on the one man. There is a young man Dorian Gray who is in friendly relationships with Basil Hallward, the artist, and Henry Wotton, the aristocrat. From the very beginning of the story we see a number of contradictions between Basil and Henry. Basil prefers to devote himself to everything very seriously, he represents vital values whereas Henry is just a theory-announcer who has got used to good things in life; and he refers to reality quite indifferent as it were just matters of fact. The great talent and seriousness of Basil are performed in his work - the picture of Dorian Gray. He has laid the whole soul and imagination in it maybe having given to it something magic. Maybe that's why the picture was to reflect Dorian's soul and conciousness. Basil taught Dorian to be honest, self-concious and responsible. But Henry tried to harm his mind having told him to take everything easy and just to enjoy the life. Since that time Dorian has begun to visit different places to communicate with different people and to commit some reckless deeds (for example, when he decided not to marry Sybil Vane and after wanted her back). All his deeds were reflected at the picture by something supernatural. Maybe it was the influence of Basil's attitude to it; maybe it was a result of Dorian's wish not to become old himself but to make the picture accept a certain view according to the deeds of Dorian in order to indicate his mistakes. But the fact is that the picture was to that or another extent magic and it was like Dorian's soul. We can imagine that when Dorian died after having tried to destroy the picture. But having died Dorian was forgiven for every sin and his image on the picture which had been getting older according to Dorian's deeds became young and handsome having indicated his purity in front of the Justice.
The idea is that we should not follow some reckless advice and vice versa have to behave ourselves responsibly and with mind.
I advice this book to the wide range of people, because the theme of the book concerns everybody.

Sue Townsend wrote her best-seller "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4" in 1982 and this book is still considered as the bestseller among British literature. It is the first book in the Adrian Mole series, which consists of 7 books.
"The Secret Diary" was based on Sue Townsend's own experience at comprehensive school.
The book shows us the inner life of an adolescent boy with all his experiences, problems, interests. Adrian Mole lifes in a problem family, he has to do a lot of housework, he has to study, he even tries to earn money, and still he finds time for reading, visiting his mother, falling in love - being almost normal child. And this is what attracts readers' attention and keeps them interested till the end of the book.
When I was reading this book, I was absolutely carried away by it. I'm sure that I will read the whole series and I strongly advise everyone who is interested in modern British literature to read it.

I've read a perfect humorous stories by Roald Dahl and was deeply touched by his sharp, witty and sometimes dark humour. His books are not only humorous, they are deeply psycological and the reader has to builed up his own suggestions and solutions. My favorites are: "The Taste" and "The Landlady". They are full of suspence and mistery and even send the chilles up to my spine!
The manner of authors's description is also remarkable. You are taken into the plot seeing some very picturesque and special details.
So, his stories really worth reading!
